Standing in front of an audience, Jeff Nichols (Sean William Scott) relives the day that motivated him to get sober. On that fateful day 10 years ago, Jeff botched a job interview because he panicked over the color of his shirt; almost got hit by a train and sank his stepfather's yacht while fishing. Jeff is an avid participant in various recovery meetings around New York City. In his "shares" he attempts to justify his problems citing a litany of real and self-diagnosed syndromes: ADD; assorted learning disabilities; Tourette's syndrome; and a balance problem. He's nearly 30 and dependent on his mother, Cynthia, and his stepfather, Dan, for financial support. He can't even keep his phone turned on.

At a meeting with his sponsee, Lenny, Jeff meets Lynn, a quirky, beautiful woman who is charmed by his funny and touching rant. Jeff, in love and on a mission purposefully runs into Lynn at a meeting in the village. She mentions that she likes writers, and Jeff, in an attempt to become her perfect match, decides he should try writing and stand-up
