A group of murderous jewel thieves known as the Midland Gang is savaging London with a crime spree. Scotland Yard is stumped, so they call upon detective Paul Temple to aid in the investigation. The shooting death of an investigator gives Temple his first lead, indicating a connection to a similar gang that was formerly active in South Africa. Temple and his dedicated associate "Steve" Trent travel the dark moors of the mysterious British countryside determined to hunt down the killers. The film is based upon the 1930s Paul Temple BBC radio series originated by Francis Durbridge.
