Amid all the doom and gloom coming from the left coast concerning the writer's talks and potential strike, Fox unleashed some good news for X Files fans. The X Files 2, the long-awaited, ballyhooed sequel to the 1998 big screen adaptation of the cult TV series, will hit screens on July 25, 2008.

This date has caught even the most die hard fan of the show off guard as the best estimate of a sequel's release was in 2009 at the earliest. In order to make this date, filming would have to begin promptly as it's assumed the movie would have a large number of special effects in it.

The latest rumors have both series regulars David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson reprising their roles of FBI agents Mulder and Scully, respectively. No plot details have been leaked yet, but expect a heavy science fiction plot mixed with an ounce or two of governmental conspiracy for good measure.

While the 25th is still wide open, The X Files 2 will face some stiff Summer competition opening a week after The Dark Knight and a week before the latest sequel.
