The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (the Oscar people) has announced that a dozen animated movies have been submitted for next year's Oscars in the Animated Feature Film category.

According to Academy Awards rules concerning this category, this means a maximum of three films can be nominated. If the submissions would have totaled at least 16, there would be five nominees in the category.

Here are the 12 movies from which Oscar nominators for the category can choose:

The nominations for the next Academy Awards won't be announced until Jan. 22. Here and now, I will give you my not-so-expert predictions for the films to get the nods. My gut tells me the lucky trio will be:

A dark horse like Persepolis could sneak in there but I doubt it. This prediction means that Shrek The Third will get excluded. That would be significant news as the first Shrek film won the Oscar in the inaugural year for the category in 2002. Shrek 2 was nominated in 2005 but lost to The Incredibles.

Speaking of The Incredibles, I believe director Brad Bird will win his second Oscar in the category as I expect Ratatouille will take the prize next year. What do you think? What do you think will be the three nominees and eventual winner for Best Animated Film? Let us know.

We'll all find out the validity of my prediction when the 80th Academy Awards are presented on Sunday, Feb. 24, 2008.
