[UPDATED] 'Alvin and the Chipmunks' coming to DVD on Apr. 1

It's no joke. Alvin, Simon, and Theodore will come to DVD and Blu-ray in their hit live-action movie on Apr. 1.

Alvin and the Chipmunks will be available in a special edition DVD and Blu-ray Disc that includes Fox Home Entertainment's new Digital Copy feature. It allows viewers to quickly and easily download a digital version of the film to a Mac or Windows-based PC computer and then transfer to select portable video devices including an iPod and/or iPhone.

The Family Guy Presents: Blue Harvest disc and forthcoming Hitman DVD have this same digital feature. A single disc DVD version containing both widescreen and full-screen formats will also be available. The single disc release doesn't include access to the digital version.

Besides the Digital Copy, bonus features on the DVD special edition include:

• Digital Copy download feature
• Behind the Nuts Munkumentary featurette
• Chip-Chip-Hooray! Chipmunk History featurette
• Hitting the Harmony featurette
• "Witch Doctor" Music Video
• Two exclusive iTunes music downloads – "Get Munk’d (DeeTown Remix)" and "Get You Goin’ (DeeTown Funk Remix)"
• Inside Look at Horton Hears a Who

The Blu-ray will have the 'History' and 'Harmony' featurettes as well as several high-definition trailers.

Alvin and the Chipmunks stars Jason Lee, David Cross and Cameron Richardson. The movie has earned over $207 million at the box office domestically.

UPDATE: Looks like the special edition is a no-go after all. This news comes directly from Fox Home Entertainment:

PLEASE NOTE - The Chipmunks have been up to their usual mischief and it has unfortunately caused Fox Home Entertainment to remove the previously announced Two-Disc Special Edition DVD from the release schedule at this time. On April 1, Alvin and the Chipmunks will be released on Blu-ray and as a single-disc DVD; below please find the updated release information. Thank you!

DVD Specs:

The Alvin and the Chipmunks DVD release is presented on a flipper disc featuring both full screen (1.31:1 aspect ratio) and widescreen format (1.85:1 aspect ratio) with English 5.1 Dolby Surround, Spanish/French Dolby Surround with English and Spanish subtitles. DVD bonus features will include:

• Chip-Chip-Hooray! Chipmunk History featurette
• Hitting the Harmony featurette
• Inside Look at Dr. Seuss’ Horton Hears a Who!

Blu-ray Disc Specs:

The Alvin and the Chipmunks BD release will be presented in widescreen format on a 25GB single-layer disc authored in AVC (MPEG 4) compression with English 5.1 DTS HD Lossless Master Audio, Spanish/French 5.1 Dolby Digital plus English, Spanish, Cantonese, Mandarin, Korean and French subtitles. BD bonus content includes:

• Chip-Chip-Hooray! Chipmunk History featurette
• Hitting the Harmony featurette
• Several high-definition trailers
