Nicolas Cage to star in 'Bad Lieutenant' remake

According to The Hollywood Reporter, actor Nicolas Cage is set to star in a remake of the 1992 film Bad Lieutenant. Harvey Keitel starred in the original.

Filmmaker Werner Herzog will direct the remake which will begin production in July. NYPD Blue scripter Billy Finkelstein is writing the screenplay.

The film is about a drug, sex, and gambling-addicted cop who begins to reflect on his life. It was rated NC-17 but cut down R-rated versions exist. Says THR, executive producer Avi Lerner promises "it will deliver as much filth as the original."

Expect a 2009 release date for the new Bad Lieutenant.
