It's kinda ironic. Visual effects probably put more butts in theater seats than acting or story but yet, the subject gets only a brief mention on film's biggest night. And then on the news recap, the category always is at the bottom of the list.

A.M.P.A.S. (the Oscar people) just announced the seven films in contention for a visual effects Oscar nomination. From these seven, the Academy's VFX branch will nominate three for the final prize.

Here are the seven finalists. None really come as a big surprise.

I believe we all agree that Avatar is a lock for a nomination. I'm guessing District 9 will be there too. Eeny meeny miny mo. My expert opinion says 2012 will be the final nominee.

To refresh your memory, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button won last year's award over The Dark Knight and Iron Man.

The nominations for the 82nd Academy Awards will be announced in less than a month -- on Tuesday, Feb. 2. The awards ceremony will be Mar. 7.
