Does new 'Tron: Legacy' trailer jump the 3D shark?

I must preface this article by saying that I am a huge fan of the original Tron movie and spent hours at the arcade trying to beat that game. In fact, I was so young I couldn't tell which came first the game or the movie and I couldn't care less.

The interesting thing is that Tron was considered a truly groundbreaking movie in terms of its special effects and computer driven sequences. You could even make a parallel to its effect on movies with another certain, more recent, movie with blue cats and a strange dialect. But, could it be that Tron: Legacy won't live up to the high standards of the original movie?

And worse yet, will it be the movie that will jump the proverbial shark as it were for the nascent re-birth of 3D as a major player in the movie industry? It's quite possible.

The new full-length trailer is out and to be frank, I wasn't moved as much as I was hoping I would be. To be completely honest, at times I thought I was watching outtakes from Speed Racer.

Yikes!

Bigger is not always better. And newer is not always improved.

Because Tron is such a beloved staple from my youth, I will give it the benefit of the doubt and simply chalk this up to a poorly cut trailer. What do you think? Am I wrong?

Tron: Legacy hits theaters on December 17, 2010.
