Ever since the American Film Institute (AFI) named its "100 Years...100 Movies" list in 1998, the AFI has been a part of the American film lexicon. As with any "best of" list, there were a few bruised egos and debates were ignited.

Over the years, the AFI has attempted to remain relevant by releasing topical lists such as "100 Years...100 Stars" and "100 Years...100 Laughs," but you can only name so many specialty lists before people start tuning you out. With that in mind, the AFI started their "AFI Awards" in 2000 that recognize the 10 best films of the year (they later added the top 10 TV series in an attempt to diversify).

So, the annual awards season has been blessed with yet another "best of" list for the last decade plus, but I always feel that the AFI does a good job of balancing the smaller, artsy films with the box office blockbusters. 2012 is no exception.

Remember since this is the American Film Institute, only American films were eligible for recognition.
