The one film that came out of the Toronto International Film Festival this year with near universal praise was the quirky film Bad Words. The film directed by and starring Jason Bateman is no-holds barred raunchy look at the competitive world of spelling bees.

Using a little known loophole, Bateman's character is able to compete in and win (presumably) a local spelling bee, setting up an interesting conundrum at the national spelling bee contest. From the trailer, Bateman's character has little to no redeeming qualities and it's very unclear what his motivation is for the wacky premise, but there is a bit of a silver lining. It seems that his character bonds (even if it's ever so slightly) with another outcast competitor, so perhaps there's room for growth there.

Even if there isn't, one thing is certain, you will be laughing at the absurdity of it all. The trailer below is very much in the hard R territory for language and it is a red-band trailer, so this isn't too surprising. Bad Words is set to hit theaters on March 21, 2014.
