Hear 'Godzilla' roar in first teaser trailer

After watching this trailer for the upcoming film, one thing is definitely certain, this isn't your father or grandfather's Godzilla. In fact, we are so removed from the whole person in a rubber suit incarnation that one might even wonder if the two things are even related.

If you're bored or curious, there's a comparison chart making the rounds today that shows us that Godzilla, much like our Happy Meals, has become super-sized. Perhaps, that has something to do with the fact that buildings are getting taller and an evolutionary need to keep up. Or it could simply mean that we need bigger and badder scares when it comes to the big screen.

Let's face it, in today's world, it takes something more than a monster that barely towers over the screen at the front of the room to get our juices flowing. And if you think this is simply another in a long line of Godzilla ripoffs ala that poorly executed 1998 film with Ferris Bueller in it, then you are dead wrong.

In the wake of Guillermo del Toro's Kaiju porn Pacific Rim, the proverbial gauntlet has been dropped and it would appear, at least from this teasing glance, that Godzilla has accepted the challenge. Aside from showcasing an awesome action sequence and the iconic Godzilla roar, the trailer reminds us that this just might be the first Oscar-worthy Godzilla film ever created.

Yep, that's right, with talent such as Seamus McGarvey, Bryan Cranston, Juliette Binoche and Ken Watanabe working in front of and behind the camera, this has the potential to be something more meaningful than simply just another monster movie. We are definitely reserving judgment until we can see more, but consider us very interested now.

Godzilla hits theaters on May 16, 2014.
