Variety is reporting that Girls actor Adam Driver has landed the role of the villain in Star Wars: Episode VII. Disney did not comment on the news, but that hasn't stopped everyone in the free world from running it as the gospel truth in the last couple of hours.

Initially, I wasn't going to report on the news when it broke. We tweeted it out, but that's about as much time as I was going to spend on it. It's not that I don't trust Variety, quite the contrary their name lends credence to the rumor, it's just that we're about to be inundated with casting rumors before the film begins shooting in April and I didn't wan't to post one unsubstantiated rumor without anything else to either back it up or worth reporting with it.

And then, this happened.

My first reaction?

My second reaction? Well, if anyone would know enough about the situation to basically tweet out confirmation, it would be Lena Dunham. Rumor substantiated, it was now "story-worthy." Of course, it didn't take long for this tweet to appear.

That's basically a big old *beep* *beep* *beep* that you hear right there. This proves that yes, J.J. Abrams can track you down in four minutes even if you're in an airplane high above the ground. Regardless, I'm 99.9% confident that Adam indeed has been cast in Episode VII. So, what does that mean?

Does that mean that we're going to see the new Darth Vadar ridicule and demean Han and Leia's daughter? Man, I hope not. What it does mean is that we are finally getting a villain who is capable of playing the role with an edge. I've never liked Adam's character in Girls because he's basically a misogynistic, self-centered asshole, but he has mellowed a bit recently. And yet, it's that ticking time bomb approach that really gets me excited about this potential casting news.

From the Variety article, it would appear that Adam's villain will be around for Episode VIII and perhaps even Episode IX. That's a lot of responsibility for a relative unknown at this point, but if anyone is up for the challenge, I think Adam could pull it off.

What do you think?
