'Minions' trailer continues excellent marketing strategy

It seems that this week is trailer week for some reason. We are getting a lot of first looks and trailer debuts this week and I have to believe that some brands are trying to maintain their momentum from the Super Bowl, while others are trying to strike when our attention is piqued.

For Minions, it's a little of both. They had a great Super Bowl ad, but they have been making all the right moves since this film was announced, so this new trailer is unexpected so soon after the Super Bowl ad, but welcome nonetheless.

The funny thing is that Minions probably doesn't even need the help. Sure, this Summer is going to be a blood bath when it comes to animated family fare with not one, but two Pixar films coming as well as Hotel Transylvania 2. But, the Despicable Me franchise is no slouch.

With worldwide earnings in excess of $1.5 billion and both films having surpassed $250 million at the domestic box office, Minions is about as much of a sure bet as there is in this industry. And yet, the marketing muscle at Universal is showing no signs of slowing down and, to be honest, the way they are knocking it out of the park, why should they?

The first full-length trailer below introduces us to the new (old?) baddie in the form of Sandra Bullock's Scarlet Overkill and does a great job setting up the main plot of the film. But again, it's Minions. These little yellow creatures were such a huge hit from the two Despicable Me films that they could probably print money with no advertising whatsoever.

Of course, with every roll of the dice, there's a potential for disaster, so you have to wonder when they will be content to let the anticipation build on its own naturally. At this point, I don't think Minions can do no wrong. They have been a part of our culture since 2010 and we haven't gotten tired of them yet, so I'm guessing that we won't reach our limit any time soon.

Minions hits theaters on July 10.
