There's something special about seeing your first film. It's most likely that you don't remember the first film that you ever saw in theaters because you were too young at the time. My first clear memory that I have from childhood is riding a bike without training wheels for the first time.

I'm not even sure how old I was when I made this memory, but it's the clearest thing that I can recall from childhood. I don't recall seeing my first film, but my parents tell me that it was one of the myriad of Disney films that came out in the late 1970s. I can tell you the first film that I do have a vivid recollection of seeing, it was The Black Hole.

This was also a Disney film, but probably not one that my parents should have shown their five-year-old son. To this day, I have vivid nightmares of that massive ball of fire that tears up the ship. So yes, if there's a reason that I'm the way that I am, I blame this early exposure to Ernest Borgnine.

For my daughter, she won't have fireballs chasing her through her nightmares. Over the weekend, I took her to see her first film in theaters, the more age-appropriate selection Minions.

Of course, she probably won't remember this film when she gets older, but at least I've got some photographic evidence of the major life milestone. As for Minions, it had a pretty big weekend as well.

Box Office 411

Universal continues its most impressive year with the animated hit Minions. The prequel to the Despicable Me films earned a massive $115 million at the box office this weekend, the second-best opening weekend ever for an animated film.

Shrek the Third kept the top spot with its record haul of $121.6 million, but Minions' performance is still nothing short of amazing. For Universal, Minions joins Jurassic World in a lethal one-two punch for the film studio that should help it to win the summer box office crown.

Disney will look too get back in the yearly race this weekend when it debuts the latest Marvel film Ant-Man. I still think this one will be the first "bomb" for Marvel, but "bomb" is relative for Marvel. At the end of its run, Ant-Man should top $200 million which many studios would kill for.

Minions looks like it will end up with $350 million or so. Jurassic World won the week against its arch rival Inside Out to finish second with $18 million to Inside Out's $17 million. Jurassic World will join the $600 million club this week, a lofty echelon that currently only has three members. Inside Out will cross the $300 million mark this week as well.
