They have been abandoned, abused and put on death row. Now animal lovers are coming to their rescue. Rescuing Rex follows the remarkable journey of stray dogs from the US and Asia on a freedom ride to Canada.

There's scruffy Nigel, cowering in the corner; Murphy, a three-legged Doberman about to be euthanized; and Jagger, whose big brown eyes reflect a desperate need for love.

Their saviors include Mary, who lives with 150 dogs in Taiwan, and Tara, a Texas rescuer sending dogs to Toronto. Says Tara: "One man's trash is another man's treasure. That's how Canada sees our dogs."

Rescuing Rex also reveals a hidden dark side to dog rescue. With few regulations, anyone with a Facebook page can call themselves a rescuer, preying on compassion for profit.

But what lies at the heart of this poignant film is our humanity: a desire to change the world, one mutt at a time. Rescuing Rex is a must watch film for anyone with a dog — or a heart.
