The town of Antril Bend has offered $25,000 to the first driller who sinks a profitable well. Wildcatter Johnny Maverick knows exactly where the oil is. Unfortunately, so does Maverick's arch-rival Mike Rawlins. Things heat up between the two men after Rawlins resorts to sabotage, causing the death of Maverick's partner, Chicopee Nevins. When beautiful con-artist Nan Dearing shows up at his camp claiming to be Chicopee's sister, Johnny takes her on as partner, unaware that he may be putting himself on the road to destruction.
